Tea-infused hand creams are your dry hands' BFFs this season

By Giselle Wedemire

My hands are almost reptilian in nature: unnaturally cold, sometimes scaly (depending on the outside temperature), and impressively dry. This only gets worse as temperatures drop and the cool fall air starts demanding that I dig my mittens out of storage.

I have no idea why my hands are that way since the rest of my body doesn't resemble a dinosaur's hide at all, but such is my lot in life. The best I can do is moisturize them as often as I can to curb the problem before my hands go all Jurassic Park on me.

On June 13, Bare English & Co. announced on their Facebook page that their brand new hand cream had just hit their online store. I am a huge Bare English & Co. convert ever since I reviewed their lip balms last winter, so I immediately got in touch with them to see how and where I could get my (dry) hands on this new product.

Each Green Tea Infused Hand Cream retails for $8.99 on their website, and they are currently available in three scents: lavender, vanilla coconut, and juicy peach. While you might guess from the name that it contains green tea (which acts as an antioxidant), the ingredient list also boasts a slew of fantastic moisturizers like oat protein, aloe juice, coconut oil, almond oil, and shea butter.

Bare English & Co.'s Lavender Green Tea Infused Hand Cream. The only thing better than the hand cream itself is the packaging. I love that the cruelty-free bunny is right on the front of the tube!

The kind folks at Bare English & Co. graciously sent me a full-sized tube of their lavender green tea-infused hand cream in June*, and I've been applying it liberally all over my scaly mitts ever since. Here's what I think of this new cruelty-free, gluten-free, and vegan offering from one of my favourite Canadian companies:

What I thought

At first sniff, the fragrance is not overpowering at all, which is nice if you're using it at work or in public around people who might be sensitive to strong fragrances. That's not to say that the scent is absent, though. Rather, it's subtle and spa-like.

It reminds me of long, luxurious baths, and the scent stays with you for a few minutes before dissipating. (This is especially great if you're like me and worry about silly things like whether or not your perfume and hand cream might clash and bring about a wicked headache. The struggle is real.)

The formula itself is deceptively lightweight. It feels like I've barely rubbed any into my skin at all, only to realize soon after that it's doing a kickass job of moisturizing my gross, dry dinosaur scales on colder days (and lightly maintaining my hands in the summer months). What's really amazing is that even though it does such a good job of moisturizing my hands, it's never greasy. That's a hard balance to strike, and this product does it beautifully.

I also find that it's especially great to apply to clean hands right after doing dishes at home. I don't use strong detergents or anything, but by the time I'm done scrubbing every thing down, my hands are generally a bit pruned and parched. Applying this hand cream post-dishes is like finally being able to put your feet up after a hard day's work -- it feels fully deserved and luxurious, like I just treated myself to a spa day.

Depending on how cold and dry our winter is this year, I might have to switch to a more intense moisturizer once we delve into sub-zero temperatures. However, until that time comes I'm planning on keeping my tube of Bare English & Co. hand cream in my purse so that it's ready to rock at all times.

Interested in trying this new product out? Head on over to their online store this week to score any of the three hand creams for a special price of $6.49. If you place an order over $9.98, you'll also be eligible for free shipping within Canada and the US. How great is that?!
